This is one of those stories that makes us believe all over again in journalism, in its power to bring truth to light. Pasternak’s use of narrative in certain chapters of the piece makes suffering real. These scenes and characters enliven the piece overall: Parts of the series are more dry summary narrative of legal and political events. We wondered whether this summary narrative might have been covered in more narrative fashion—with fleshed-out characters, concrete detail, scenes—but recognized that this might have made the piece book-length, much more complicated, and probably have required research beyond the scope of the project.

The series’ multi-media package has beautiful photos and audio.
