Editor’s note: This month, we bring you brief reminders from pros around the world about what or who helped them forward in their careers.

[dcI’[/dc]m thankful to the editor who introduced me to “Bird by Bird.” Who made it ok for me to consider and then conquer that voice in your head that tries to convince you you can’t write. But you can!

To the editor who once asked me: What’s the verb?! Oh RIGHT! Stories have ACTION and if you can’t sum up your story — subject, verb — you probably don’t yet have a focus!

And to Alex Tizon, whose byline remains my go-to for inspiration of what can be done on a daily deadline. It IS possible to craft something beautiful. Maybe never the way Tizon could, but who better to try to emulate?

Florangela Davila ~ news journalist, writer, radio producer

NOTE: “Invisible People,” a posthumous collection of Tizon’s published work, was published last month by Temple University Press
