In this final installment of the Times race series, a reporter turns her attention to another journalistic effort to address race in America. The Akron Beacon Journal won a Pulitzer Prize for its series exploring the racial attitudes of its city. Canedy reports that the effort turned out to be contentious for its newsroom, even as it was considered healing for readers and community. After the Beacon Journal's series ran, a black columnist and a white columnist had a difficult time getting along. The Times' piece seeks to get at the complexities of their disagreements, their points of view. We understand that while race may be a social phenomenon, it gets experienced very personally. As in the rest of the series, we get a glimpse, through narrative, of how race plays out in individual lives, how it is actually lived.
