A Life in the Balance

We have to admit that the topic of this story, its high drama, made us a bit wary. Still, the series is well worth reading because it is an engrossing tale. Rose's pregnancy, it seems to us, makes the story: It lends suspense, provides a sense of destination. Smith focuses on this element of the tale. She does a fine job portraying Rose as a complex, determined, heroic character. We were interested, too, in the mix of reconstruction and close reporting. It makes for a good study in both crafts.
