Rose offers an insightful first-person account of his experience with mental illness. Memoirs of descents into internal hells are getting more common—and that seems like a good thing. They demystify and de-stigmatize what is still a fraught area. Rose happened to bring to his experience a skeptical, aw-get-over-it attitude, which made recognizing his illness and treating it more slow. Some readers may see such traits in themselves, which is in part what makes this a valuable essay.
