Why is it great? This sentence is one of the most vivid metaphors I’ve ever read. It captures the helplessness of a life of desperation, where you can’t even jump from the window, just stare out of it, seeing the life you might have had while the flames and smoke come ever closer. The use of the words “trapped, locked” (that comma!) haunts me.
“We all live in a house on fire, no fire department to call; no way out, just the upstairs window to look out of while the fire burns the house down with us trapped, locked in it.”
—Tennessee Williams, "The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore"
