Pipeline to Peril

This is a powerful work of reporting, a devastating account of exploitation. The two-part series tells the story of a group of young Nepalese men who were recruited to work in the Middle East, sent to Iraq against the expectations of most of them and slain by insurgents.

We were struck by these lines toward the end of the piece: "Although it was barely noticed at the time, and largely forgotten by the outside world since, it remains perhaps the worst massacre of foreign workers since the outbreak of the war."

These lines point out, indirectly of course, the power of pairing investigative work with narrative -- a strategy that can uncover wrongs and make people care about events that otherwise might be given only passing attention.
