My first 8 professional years at the Eugene Register-Guard, the best imaginable training in the fundamentals of community journalism. I had demanding editors with high standards, amazing colleagues who went on to do great things, endless opportunities to learn and grow. Plus, our merry band of newsroom scamps pulled some outlandish pranks (fire-worthy these days), such as the time we disassembled the assistant managing editor’s glass-wall office and left it in pieces on the floor ….
