In broad strokes, the internet has contributed to several difficult situations we face as journalists in 2019, but I’m also thankful for the internet’s archival magic. Digitized materials make historical research more accessible. Those details, previously hidden even if just by geographic distance, can enrich a story narrative with contemporaneous context — everything from decades-old radio reports and video clips to text descriptions as granular as the color of someone’s coat on a rainy Tuesday two hundred years ago.
